LONDON 20 MARCH, 2018: FE, the investment ratings and research agency, announced today the fund managers that have made it onto the shortlist for this year’s FE Alpha Manager of the Year Awards with Chris Reid, Gary Greenberg, Polina Kurdyavko, Alex Wright and Harry Nimmo among the list of the industry’s top talent.

There are 14 award categories this year, including the highly coveted FE Alpha Manager of the Year and Best New FE Alpha Manager.  See table for full list of categories and shortlisted managers.

The managers represent a total of 41 fund groups including GAM, Janus Henderson, Majedie, Polar Capital, Sanlam, T. Rowe Price and Unicorn.  Old Mutual features most in the shortlists with six nominations followed by Morgan Stanley with five.

Anthony Smouha of GAM, Old Mutual’s Daniel Nickols and Kristian Heugh from Morgan Stanley have each been shortlisted in three categories this year.

The managers have been shortlisted from the 198 fund managers that were awarded an FE Alpha Manager Rating in the 2018 rebalance.  These ratings recognise a manager’s ability to create risk-adjusted alpha, outperformance in both rising and falling markets, and those who consistently beat their sector peers.

Charles Younes, research manager at FE comments: “The FE Alpha Manager awards recognise the very best talent in our industry – those who can combine consistent performance throughout their career with phenomenal outperformance over the past year.

“During this period, active managers had to think about future risk while overall market volatility stayed low.  Equity managers enjoyed a strong rally driven by a few technology names and had to ask themselves whether they could overlook those expensive names.  On the contrary bond managers had to deal with further rate hikes and answer the question: where does it end and what is next?”

The shortlist for each category was determined by identifying the highest scoring FE Alpha Managers from the 2018 rebalance.  A mix of quantitative and qualitative assessment was then applied to pick the brightest stars.

The process of elimination for the Best Manager in Bull Market and Best Manager in Bear Market categories was slightly different. FE looked at specific performance ratios such as bear/bull beta or maximum drawdown to identify the best managers in these different environments.

The winners of each category will be announced at the FE Alpha Manager Awards ceremony on 17th May 2018 at the Museum of London.
